"Across The Sea"

THIS REVIEW MIGHT HAVE SOME SPOILERS !

Last night's episode was suppose to be an event of epic proportion, sadly it wasn't. "Across The Sea" was the episode that explained to the viewers the origin of two of the most iconic inhabitants, Jacob and the Man in Black. To me i honestly can say that this episode was one of the worst episodes I have ever seen in lost. Now of course this is only my opinion, and if you ask anyone that knows me, I am very optimistic about new episodes, I never seen nothing wrong with them (except first half of season 2 with the tallies, talk Jebus they are dead.)

I can't help but feel that this episode was too little too late. We didn't really get the huge answers that we were promised with this episode. I was hoping that they would answer who built the statue at least, which they simply didn't. We didn't even get the name of the man in black or what the "rules" are, it was just a major let down. The amount of time focused on Jacob and the Man in Black as children was incredibly slow. The whole childhood sequence could have been narrowed down to two or three scenes tops. All they had to do was demonstrate their friendship, playing that black and white board game, and when the boy in black left the mother to go to the others. They just dragged on the boy in black constant desire to leave the island and the mother saying he can't.

Lets flash forward a few more scenes, almost 20 mins before the episode ends. Something that really bother me was the well. So by now the man in black (30 years have past) is living with the others and they have dug up a well and built a donkey wheel, but before he was able to place the donkey wheel, his mother comes and knocks him out (not before hugging him and telling him that she is sorry.) Then she fills the well with dirt and kills of the others, here comes the question, so then who re-dug the well? One part of the episode i actually did like was the transformation of MIB from a simple evil entity to a complex man who has simply a goal, which is to get off the island. When you see him in tears while Jacob drags him to the light-tunnel and tossed him in was sad, and I felt him, although he did murder his mother (sorry but she had it coming). And talking about the light, what was that, me and my girlfriend come to conclusion that it was just the evil inside the island that needed to be protected. Whatever it was, the moment the MIB dropped inside the tunnel, Smokey came out. But what was interesting was that the MIB wasn't smokey, his body was discovered by Jacob. Which leads us to the best but not so great revealing in lost, who were the Adam & Eve bodies found in the caves in the episode "House of the Rising Sun." Adam & Eve were no other then Jacobs mother & the MIB. Which contradicts what Jack said in that same episode, of them being only 50 years old.  Clearly they were at least a few hundred years.

In conclusion, I was very excited to see this episode. I guess I just expected to much that what I received wasn't worth it. I think if this episode was place in the beginning and replaced "What Kate Does," it could have probably gave certain people hope especially since this episode came out right after an amazing episode entitled "The Candidate." I give this episode 2/4 Hatches, I am going very optimistic towards the next episode, i am sure we won't be disappointed, I mean with a title like "What They Died For" we expect not to be disappointed.
